Hurricane Gustav

Here we are on Friday and most of the area in and around Baton Rouge still doesn't have power back yet. We feel very fortunate to be electrified already.

Here are a few photos taken during the hurricane. Trust me it got worse than this and we were so NOT outside taking pictures for that bit. Excuse the horrible video....I'm not very good at that. But it does give you an idea of what it was like.

These scenes are from my front porch looking out to the left and right.

Our friends, Ronny and Joy, used to live in this house. They have been gone and year and we miss them every day. We were so glad to have them back with us for a week, even though it was to help us make it through a hurricane.

What the h*ll is that???!!! Oh, it's just the neighbor's shed about to take flight.
(sorry, no pictures of neighbor's RV shed, it swayed and creaked b
ut didn't blow over,
only ended up a little crooked ) That's Ronny, Mike and Joy.

This is how we live after the power goes out. The only rooms with air conditioning
are the 2 bedrooms. At least we have a cool place to sleep and we have ice, which is great!!!

Mexican Train Game.......we keep a running game out on the table. I even
win sometimes! WoooooHoooo! Kinda takes your mind off the 70 mph winds
outside...well, not really, but anything is better than sitting in the dark listening
to the weather.

Just thought you'd like to see a before shot of my back yard. I took this one Sunday.

Here's what Gustav left after about 8 hours of wind and rain on Monday.
We continued to have stormy weather for 2 more days but nothing like the
first day, thank goodness.

We had put this old ref. out for pick up but with the storm
coming we moved it back behind the shop against the wall.
Gusts blew it out into the yard! Whoa nelly!

Here are people in line to get inside Walmart to buy food, ice, fans,
baby supplies, water, tarps etc. The power is out but Walmart opened
and let people come in. As soon as one shopper would come out,
another could go in. I can't imagine how long some of these
people had to wait.

It was so hot and humid outside it was hard to
breath.

There was one or two insurance companies with tents and vans
in the parking lot offering a cool place to shelter and cold drinks.

This is part of the magnificent army of companies that came to our aid.
There are tree cutter crews and electrical crews from all over
the nation! Lurve you guys! Thank you!!

Downed billboard signs.

Lots of tarped houses. This isn't in our neighborhood, but nearby.

Big trees that blew over roots and all because the ground was so wet.

Lots of scenes like this.

Fallen trees on power lines was a common sight too.

Here are some videos. From the first winds until some that were much worse before dark. Near the end of the last video you can see a power gusts. There were a lot of those. *shiver*

Thanks honey bunny! Yeah, it could have been a lot worse. We are just holding our breath about the next one.
